FAQs
Who are Cognitive Media?
We are an animation studio based in Folkestone, Kent in the UK, whose mission is to help people to discover and learn new stuff with the help of storytelling, drawing and animation.
Why Cognitive Media?
"Cognitive" is a term that describes the process people use for remembering, reasoning, understanding, and using judgment; the ability to think and make sense out of what is seen, heard, felt, and experienced, in order to solve problems. We use "Media" to help thinking; our drawings bring content to life. These drawings make that content cogent, memorable and fun.
What services do you offer?
We create animated films that help people make sense of what is sometimes, challenging and difficult to grasp content. We enjoy helping to explain this complex information in simple and engaging ways.
Please visit the What We Do section of this website for further details of our full range of services. What is an Animate?
Our most popular technique is a filmed drawing process that is edited in time with a spoken audio track. A lot of people are calling this process 'Animates'. The term 'Animates', in this context from our relationship with the RSA, who coined the phrase to title their RSA Animate series. Although technically not traditional animation we still like to think we are giving life or spirit to the content.
What is the RSA Animate Series?
We have partnered with the RSA to deliver the RSA Animate series and you can watch the videos on the Our Work section of this website. You can find out more about our partnership with the RSA and how the Animate series developed on our History page. The RSA are the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. They are an organisation that has been going since the Age of Enlightenment and are doing really good stuff. They encourage public discourse and critical debate by providing platforms for leading experts to share new ideas on contemporary issues. Please visit their website for more information: www.theRSA.org
Do you guys take on commercial jobs?
Yes. We do!
What kind of companies do you work with?
We work with global clients from the private, public, charity and community sectors and the work we take on aligns with our values. We are looking to promote great ideas that aid progressive social change. We would rather not align ourselves directly with political parties or campaigns but that does not exclude political debate. We often work within the education and charity arenas.
How do we tell you what we need?
If you have a project in mind, there is an enquiry form on our Contact page that asks for the information we need to get the ball rolling.
We will let you know if we have any questions and then send you an information pack that will explain all you need to know about how we work. Once we have come to an agreement and finalised the schedule, you will need to provide your script, audio file and transcript before we can start work.
Do you guys write the script or help with the audio at all?
As experts in their fields we think our clients are best placed to decide on the subject and content of the script, but we can assist with script development, sourcing voiceover talent and voiceover recording if necessary.
How much do you cost?
We like to find out about our clients and their projects to offer a bespoke service that responds to their needs. The price of your project will depend on a number of factors, such as the length of the film, your technical specification, the complexity of the animation, which illustrator works on your project and how it will be used. If you would like a price for your project, please complete the enquiry form on our Contact page.
How soon can I get a video?
We schedule in work three months in advance. From your initial enquiry to final delivery can take roughly six months, depending on your needs, the complexity of your project and our availability. The first step is to complete the enquiry form on our Contact page, then if we think we can help tell your story we will get in touch with a proposed schedule.
Can I come and meet with you?
We like to spend time with our clients and once we’ve decided to work together we will arrange conference calls and meetings to develop creative ideas and get an agreement in place.
Can I come and work with you?
We advertise all our positions on our Opportunities page, unfortunately we don't always have time to respond to speculative applications.
Can I come to Cognitive Media for work experience or an internship?
Understandably, we get quite a large number of requests from people wishing to come to Cognitive Media for work experience or placements. Unfortunately, we do not offer any internships.
We will occasionally have other positions and advertise these on our Opportunities page as they arise.
Do you do tours of the studio?
Unfortunately due to the confidential nature of our work we do not give studio tours, but you can visit our About Us pages to find out more about our team and where we work.
Can I have an autograph? Or even a little doodle?
Unfortunately, we do not accept requests for autographs. As you can imagine, our team is super busy working on exciting projects and so they don’t really have the time to respond to requests for drawings and doodles.
Recent News

We’re thrilled to announce we’ve recently had the opportunity to work with the excellent Professor Richard Wiseman, on an innovative new study comparing the psychological influence of a plain talking head clip, with that of a hand-drawn animated video. The results were really exciting!
